Scooter will not start from kickstart

Postby lpdarkone » Mon Aug 03, 2015 3:00 pm

Hi all HELP

My scooter is very temperamental when I start it from the kickstart first thing on a morning when i kick her over no problem starts 3 or kicks, then when I have run her for a while it is a nightmare to start from the kickstart more often I have to bump her off.

I have tried turning the petrol of before I reach my destination and still no good it is a nightmare if I am just going to the shops or filling her up at the petrol station having to bump it nearly all the time sometimes it will start first kick but more often than not its a push leaving me needing oxygen.

Once running all is good with no issues what so ever.

I am wondering could i be putting to much 2 stroke in her when I fill her up, at the moment i put double the amount of oil to litres in petrol fro example if i put 5 litres of fuel i put 10 litres of oils from the measuring jug she does not blow smoke out so I have no indication that it is oil rich I have used fully synthetic oil since i got her as this is what I was told to use from the guy who I bought her off and to be honest like I have said once she is running she flys.

Can anyone help with ideas.

Have you got a picture of your measuring jug? Or can you tell us if it says what the % is?

Let us know, Warren.

Most people put 30ml or 40ml of oil in per litre of fuel.

the other side just says 1 litre, 2 litre, 3 litre, 4 litre and 5 litre

A friend who is a very experienced scooter mechanic has been trying to get to the bottom of a similar problem on his brother's GP for some time. He has tried different carburettors and CDI units. Eventually, he measured the resistances in the stator, run the engine to normal temperature, then checked them again. The resistances were all wrong. He changed the stator and the problem was solved. Worth a try if you've got another stator ?

Had same problem for years ,I had wrong choke cable in,it was too short ,old time mechanic took it to spotted it straight away, held against a new one it was 1/2 inch short,so ment no free play in cable so when I sat on scooter choke came on,carb was flooded every time I stopped when hot,he also upped my pilot jet, been Brill since

Could be a number of things really, but I'd check your choke 1st as this seems to be quite common, just make sure that the plunger is all the way down when choke is turned off. Also when starting do not touch the throttle, amazing the number of people blame their carb, etc. for poor starting when it is actually them twisting the throttle as they kick.

Also, sounds like you are mixing your oil at 4% from your description, what oil are you using and is it standard or tuned? 4% is probably overkill, I tend to use 3%ish in mine
