12v points stator

Postby Nobby » Sat Sep 05, 2015 9:18 am

Can someone tell me where I can get my 6v points stator converted to 12v...or where I can by a 12v points stator... 60s style.
Cheers....

Hi.

Try Bedlam (01234 327555). They had a few of them last time I 'looked'

If not , I might be able to find one or put you in touch with somebody that converts six volt stators.

12 volt points...it's the future!

Hey Nobby,

Also, give Beedspeed a try as they had all sorts of parts for this system too.

Good luck hunting.

There's a man called Byron that does that sort of thing as well. He's probably on here somewhere.

Hi Nobby,
I assume you want to convert your lighting coils to 12volt.You used to be able to obtain coils from ebay (I had to trim the plastic bobbins slightly to fit)...but I can't see any at this time,However ScootRS sell coils or you can buy a 12volt points stator.

They used to do a 12v conversion back in the old days. Not that I know a lot about it. Except that there were Zenner diodes involved and it seemed like a bit of a cobble up. Knowing nothing about electrickery, can you covert a points stator to 12v and run it with a modern Ducati regulator and CDI in the same way that you can an electronic kit?

They are basically the same conversion as the current Wassel conversion, only on the original conversion they wired the coils to make the most of the current by wiring the lighting coils in pairs to produce a higher amperage at revs instead of dumping excess voltages.

The Wassel rectifier is a direct replacement for the old style Lucas rectifier and Zenor Diode setup so it will work just as well with any original old style 12v conversion points or electronic.

I still wire all of my own 12v conversion stators the old way, two sets of coils in series then the two set of coils joined in parallel, it lowers the working voltage of the rectifier (the rectifier dumps excess voltage to earth) the stator doesn't need to produce 70+ volts which it can easily with four coils wound in series.

"can you covert a points stator to 12v and run it with a modern Ducati regulator and CDI in the same way that you can an electronic kit?"

Yes you can convert points stators but you have to fit a pickup and lt coil.

Thank you for that Captain. Seems such an easy thing to do. It's a wonder more people don't do it. We've been bedazzled by electronic kits.

12V Ducati Points conversion,
stator work done from Mr. Captain Pugwash,
I feel very lucky for using one of his stators,
I've built many many engines in my life,Mr. Captains's stator is one of the best things I've ever used on a Lambretta.
THANK you Mark.

I think the Captain is hiding his light under a bushel. :D

I had a very similar set up done for me a while ago. But, although it worked after a fashion you had to ring its neck to get any power out of it. Not sure where it was going wrong.

These systems normally work very well, with plenty of power on tap at any revs and an ignition system that is considerably more reliable than most of the cheapo Indian electronic kits available on Ebay.

That said, I've decided to replace all of my DC kits with AC (12v and 6v) as I can't be dealing with battery maintenance, which over the years has proven to be more of a pain in the *** than the benefits they provide over straight 12v AC, points and/or electronic.

Adam

PS - Thankfully, the cheapo Indian stators fail so frequently that there is always a knackered one for me to upgrade :)

I've not experienced any of the problems Adam eludes to with batteries & when you think back to a lot of UK specification Lambrettas had 6 volt batteries (or 12 volt upgrade) without notoriety, it makes you wonder why he has had such a change of heart.

That said, I was wondering whether anybody had ran the 12 volt dry cell batteries as common place in alarms etc. They are not 'low but 'no' maintenance, have no 'right way up' to worry about & are sealed.

Turns out I more than likely used capt pugwashs conversions in the 80s sold via bedlam!, I don't remember having a prob with the battery's then (positive earth) but a few years ago I built a tv200 with 6v standard ac system and it was a right pain !- the new battery kept going flat because I didn't use it regularly and then the lights would be piss poor because most of the volts were being drained off to charge the battery again.... And then it would kick drops of acid out of the overflow pipe while it was charging..... Ruining the paintwork on the head cowl!!, was great while the battery was charged tho!
