I have a feeling that by then, the advantages of long strokes were beginning to be realised.

The 'Cooler' was emulating the geometry of a motocross layout, being long stroke. It was all LLRT/MSC stuff.

Did Vince have a big 'off' @ Three Sisters (courtesy of Simon 'Something-or-other' who was stationary) over the hill crest?

Ralph Saxelby might well have been involved, too! I can't go upsetting him! Might see him @ Cadwell with Ryan this weekend. That will be entertaining!

Ralph goes to the Kings Hall all-nighters, & if he spots me, he shuffles about 200 yards to get to me. Hysterical!

you would think this the case, however there has been in the past and some very fast and competitive Group 4 Lambretta's (200cc standards class) running 54 stroke x 70 bore. There is (or was earlier in the season) currently a group 4 using short stroke 54 x 70, which is running in one of the top BSSO teams.

Conversely, a similarly dated engine, namely the Villiers 9E based kart motor as used in the UK competitions will be restricted to Ø60.9 mm maximum with a stroke of 72 mm. Although reed valves are allowed I understand that not to be a prerequisite to attaining the greatest power as they can only be used in the inlet tract which remains in the original position.

They get 42 bhp.
