Which small block kit?

Need help with a tuning kit, how do you tune your scooter, which kit should I choose, and all general tuning and modifcations questions are for in here.

Which small block kit?

Postby Marty ULC » Thu Sep 24, 2015 8:04 pm

Another "which kit should I buy?" Thread

Have an li 150 engine, want to keep the standard gearing and have a spare SIL gp crank and electronic ignition and they bearing will changed.

Budget will be limited so don't want a kit that will overpower what I have meaning I'd have to buy new crank sprockets etc.

What would be the best matched carb-pipe-kit combinations out there that will suit general hooning around on? I'd like to keep the battery tray and am keen on having an expansion chamber but one that won't fall to bits.

Not asking much am I. ..

What's a decent expansion chamber to go with it?

Remember I'm a novice but of the two small block kits I have the Mugello 186 is the most fun. Paired with a PHBH26 and Gori (large) I can thrash it around all day and it still wants more. Not the fastest but super reliable. Did originally build it with a JL3 Curly but couldn't get it to stop pinking, so changed to the Gori. I did use a copper base gasket to ensure a good seal between the large ports and my casing as I had a small leak. However even with the leak (that I didn't notice) it still got me to Davos and back without issue. Mine has been bullet proof and I love it. Rode it to work today.

I have a muggy 186 in my special which works very well with a 26mm and an Indian big bore so I know it's a decent kit and works well with the standard Indian crank and 5.2 gearing.

However I want to put an expansion chamber on the other engine not a clubman. This is important to me, call it a midlife crisis if you will but I want a big bloody pipe sticking out of the side of a ratty series 1.

with the mugello 186 I have a 28mm carb and a JL3 expansion pipe.
Just had it dynoed and it produced 16.8 bhp with a top speed of 63mph.
I was a bit disappointed with the speed rating, but there it goes

Sounds like a plan for mine, what gearing have you in it?

Sounds like mine, but try a 16 front sprocket (if you havent) with a li 150 box. I have a 30 mm delorto and bgm clubman very similar bhp, great torque and managed 69.2 mph (gps) down the bypass before i bottled it. Very pleased with how it rides.

I don't mean to be rude, this is genuine medical advice.

Get your eyes tested; it has the same raised edge as all the Spanish mudguards

It's a TSR EVO pipe on my Avanti engine. Not sure it wouldn't be too big for a Mugello 186 but maybe a grown up could tell us?

Hi Jonno, the front mudguard is really beated up, but it seems the same as any other Spanish one I've seen, just not in very good condition, and with a big dent in the front.

Gotta love a ratty original scooter with a tuned engine! I'm running a mugello 198 with an ancillotti and 28mm phbh. Love it! Pulls really well for a small block and had long rides at 65 mph with no problems. The mugello is a well renown kit.

If you're going to fit a Muggy then why not fit the 200 small block version?

If your fitting a standard SIL gp crank,I would change the big end bearing if I were you,the Indian bearings are known to be a bit hit and miss.

Would the following set up work well together:
Mugello 198
30mm dellorto (remote filter or open mouth?)
JL3
Standard gp crank
No porting/tuning
Li150 gearing, standard 5.2
Standard clutch with uprated springs.

Also would the series 1 side case be up to the job and will the standard throttle wheel have enough travel to open the carb fully?
