Centre Stand

Postby JETEX » Wed Jan 20, 2016 2:38 am

Can anyone recommend a Series 3 centre stand that doesn't lift the front of the bike high into the air ( preferably stainless steel, and with holes for the feet pins ) ?. I bought mine from a reputable dealer, but there's no holes and the bottom of the front wheel is about 4 inches off the floor. I've tried drilling the stand with titanium / cobalt drills but it's rock hard. I might just have to take an angle grinder to it and glue the feet on.

Often, the problem with re-made stands is that they have the stand lugs welded on in the wrong position. As a result they sit far too vertical when on the stand. This has two effects, as the front wheel sits too far of the ground, and the scooter can easily roll forward when parked, and fall off the stand, damaging the bodywork (a classic "in the garage" incident)

The stand should have holes for the stand feet. Glueing the feet on would look right (initially), but it is not the answer. The pin helps support the rubber when the stand is deployed.

Have a look at some old photos to see how a scooter should sit on its stand, and compare it with yours. If yours is not fit for service, send it back.

I am in the market for a new stand, but I might prefer to buy an old one at Wicksteed.

I initially bought a standard one but the weld on the lug broke within hours. Pretty cross as I'd had it painted with the scoot.

I replaced it with a stainless one from Cambridge Lambretta and it fitted perfectly, front wheel about 4cm off the floor.

Had holes for feet pins too.

Both wheels and both legs of the stand should rest on the ground for it to fit perfectly.....

That's exactly what happened Martin. I have an old hospital bed as a workbench. The platform is about 12 to 18 inches from the floor when the bed is in the 'down' position. The scooter was on the bed and I pushed it back into the corner of the shed on it's small castor wheels. The bed hit a snag and the scooter rolled forward off the stand and crashed to the floor. Oh dear, I uttered ( or words to that effect ). Fortunately, it didn't have any panelwork on, just the engine in the frame, but it did scrape the rear light unit which I''ve had to have repainted. Lesson learnt, I strap it down now with ratchet straps. It sits quite high on the front end, and the stand is very vertical. It looks like a puff of wind would blow it off the stand. KBR Scooters advertise a correct height stand but it's not stainless. I might bite the bullet and buy one of those and paint it.
