Near side rear footboard support bent!

Postby 507VBH » Wed Jan 27, 2016 9:48 pm

Hi,

The nearside rear footboard hanger on my tatty series 2 looks a bit bent downwards. Is there a trick for getting it back into position? Is it safe to shove a bit of scaffolding pole over the end and pulling it out and up a bit? I don't want to risk breaking the welded joint between it and the frame tube!

Cheers

Thanks!

Do you happen know what the gap between the fan cowling and the inside edge of the footboard should be? On mine there is only a few mm clearance. If I can sort out the footboard support then this should give a bit more space. Another thing that I could do with knowing is what is the gap between the tyre and the back of the support? It is about 115mm on my series 2.

Cheers.

on my S2, the closest the flywheel cover to the floorboard is approx. 7mm at the head cowl end.. The majority of the floorboard is about 12mm away

I had the problem on a Series III & used tubing to lever the dogleg back to a position where it should have been, but it’s not easy.

A well taped surface & plastic pipe inside of the steel tubing will minimise damage to any painted surface.

The support won’t bend just where you’d like it to so you have to restrain the leg to stop it moving with blocks of wood & ratchet straps.

You need to take reference measurements from a good leg or even just the opposite side of the bike.

Good Luck!

Could someone take a picture of the near side footboard support from behind so that I can what it is supposed to look like?

It might be that it is just the horizontal bit that is bent!

Cheers

Something that I've noted on a few Ser 3 frames is that the near side hanger feet are bent up . Thinking they are damaged, I've noted that the actual hangers are welded on to the main tube at different heights at the factory so I guess the bloke who then fitted the foot boards tweaked the foot up so they sat level. If your frame is bare, lay a straight edge on the front and main spar and the rear hanger and it will show if it's out.

I have measured from the end of the support to the bump stop boss and it is pretty much the same on both sides so it looks like it is just the horizontal part that is bent downwards.

If the arm was bent in,this would show at the footboard/legshield joint as they wouldn't be parallel.

Attacked it with a fence post bolted to the support and now it is straight enough!

Thanks for the suggestions.
