AF light flywheel + ignition retard unit?

Postby TVSi » Sun Mar 06, 2016 7:28 pm

I have a AF light flywheel + AFR HT ignition coil and was hoping to use it on a new engine build with either a MTEC, Kytronic or possibly an Augusto ignition retarder. has anyone had any success or issues with this type of set up? thanks

Nobody using a advance / retard ignition with an AF light flywheel at all? I would really appreciate some feedback on this before taking the plunge just in case i'm wasting my time, cheers

Hi ,I'm using an Af lightened flywheel ,bgm stator and a Mtec box and have had no issues apart from it doesn't like Ducati CDI's it starts to miss fire at - about 6000rpm but I put a cheap Indian one (Mitsubishi) and all's good.

Thanks Mori, that's great info

I know that the AF light flywheel can cause misfiring in some set ups  Based on this I thought I would ask opinions and see if anyone had been successful with this combo.

I think I will give it a go and see what happens as what is worst that can happen......I suppose a bit of misfiring and then a change of flywheel to a mid weight SIL ;)

I experienced misfiring with an AF light flywheel several years ago - it was providing trigger pulses more than once per revolution of the flywheel. I checked it with a strobe, and discovered that the pulses occurred when the centres of some of the pole pieces in the flywheel passed over the pickup coil. I eventually decided that the brass rivets/plugs holding the pole pieces in place (being non-magnetic) were the cause of the problem, causing a disturbance in the magnetic field as they passed over the trigger coil. I decided to drill out the brass plugs, and drilled & tapped the holes to fit M6 countersunk head retaining steel screws from the outside of the flywheel, trimming the ends of the screws flush with the pole pieces. A long & messy job with lots of magnetic swarf, IIRC...... The result was amazing - only one pulse per revolution & no misfiring. (I don't know if AF flywheels still use the same method of retaining the magnetic pole pieces, but if so, AF need a lesson in basic electromagnetic theory.....)
I imagine that as long as it's only getting one trigger pulse per revolution, the ignition retard unit will work with all types of flywheel. If it's getting several random pulses per revolution as well as the correct one, I would say all bets are off!

I have a AF mid-weight flywheel, BGM electrics and M-Tech.........no issues, runs smooth and fitted first time with no adjustments needed.
