Gear wheel ? Plastic ?

I have just reassembled my lower headset ( Serveta late series 3 ) which has been painted. I took this apart months ago when it was warm enough to work in the garage. I re-fitted the plastic gear-wheel but have mislaid what held it onto the shaft. I cannot remember if it was a small nut and bolt or was a pin driven through with an interference fit. In Sticky's manual they all seem to be brass gear wheels. Any help would speed up my MOT, thanks.

It will be a metal 'roll pin' not a nut and bolt.

The roll pins are crap and often come loose, which has prompted me to drill the rod on a number of mine and then secure the wheel with a suitable screw.

I appreciate that this reply won't help you for this weekend, but I always opt for the metal gear wheel on a splined control rod. I then weld the "spade" at the left hand end onto the gear change in order to eliminate as much slack as possible at the top end of the gear change "chain".

You should get a pin at a motorcycle shop, motor factors or smaller car repair garages. You could try a spirol pin or mills pin instead of a roll pin. Roll pins usually come loose because they are fitted incorrectly, the pin should not be fitted so the turning force can close it.

i tap the hole, then put a bolt though the wheel hole and tighten it up on the rod, drill the hole in the gearwheel so the bolt will pass though, you can do the same with the metal wheels to give less flex,i do both wheels, also the bolt cant fall out, much like adams fix.

if you have a Charlies store near you they do a pack of roll pins for a couple of quid there should be one in there

I do the same, tap rod to M5 and use a bolt but another tip with the roll pins is to put a lockwire through it.

I use a nut and bolt on the gearchange and the throttle rod,never come lose even after 6 years of use.
