electrical problems

Hi, i've just replaced my ignition switch with a scootopia a.c switch and now my horn & side lights don't work. I took out each wire one at a time & replaced with the same colour. All the connections seem to be ok.
Any ideas please ?

The Scootopia ignition switch has the original Italian wiring colours.If yours is Indian it may have different wiring colours.

Thanks for the reply. The colours all matched the one i was replacing so i assumed they'd be the same ???

Get hold of a wiring diagram for your scooter. Otherwise, you are just guessing I am afraid.

that's definitely the case - the colours maybe the same but what they are connected to in the switch can be different.
Had it with indian replacements on a few occasions

I had a similar one on a mk1 vespa recently bought a "compatible" indicator switch - when it came I just looked at the colours and they were correct .....fitted it and connected colour to colour and it was all over the shop - when I looked at where they connected on the switch they were all different .....so I took it out and swapped and resoldered it in correct order....another 10 minute job that turned in a couple of hours !!

afterwards I was thinking it reminded me of Eric Morecambe when he said he was "playing the right notes but in the wrong order"

dont what model you have but normally one side of horn will have 12 or 6volt the other side of horn will probably have a white wire that goes to horn buton.The button shorts the white wire to ground completing the circuit and the horn beeps.On gp the ign switch has a long brown wire that provides the source voltage for your horn. If you dont have a meter rig up a 6 or 12v bulb depending on your machine earth one side of the bulb and use the other wire to connect with wires from your switch to find out what wires are "live" during different switch positions.

Had an issue similar today with my new 12v electrics and specifically the horn. all checked out good on the meter before install but horn didn't respond. I reversed the white and brown on the 12v horn and she farts liie a duck now! - Andrew

Hi mate,
The purple on the Scootopia switch needs to be connected in with the browns, this will power up the yellow for the sidelights.

Got mi sidelights (thanks Shaun) but still no horn. When i spoke to the mechanic at the shop where i bought the ignition switch , he said i didn't need the long brown which was doubled up so i snipped it ( the brown wires on the previous ignition were the same & the horn worked) now i'm wondering where does the horn get its power from ? Do i need to reconnect it ?

I'm afraid you do need the long brown wire,that is the main feed for the horn.If you have snipped the long wire off the original ignition switch and left it connected to the horn its a simple job to solder the original wire to were you have snipped the brown wire,if not you'll have to remove the horn horn casting to fit the new wire,unless you can reach to fit it through the horn grill.

The horn usually has the permanent live going straight to the horn. The other terminal on the horn is ground/earth, this is the wire that goes to the switch/button which when operated makes a connection to earth/frame and completes the circuit.

Ok. Thanks. I'll get the wire soldered. Can't understand why the other ignition switch worked without it or why the mechanic told me it wasn't needed.

Glad the purple helped with yur sidelights, easy mistake.
Why the mechanic said to chop the brown I am not sure it would have an expensive waste of time for Scootopia to add the long brown in just for it to be chopped off before fitting

Cheers Shaun, the impression he gave me was that it was needed for some models but not all. At least i know now & will have it sorted by the weekend.
