It seems to be a rule that it's more economic to by a gasket set. I have found any type to be fine. I always grease both sides of the gasket. The helps it seal and it will release without tearing so can be re used. Handy if you are midway through your trans Siberia charity run.

I buy the thick gaskets like CamLam produce. Four years on the road scooter & the same type has been on a racing machine for even more years with constant stripdowns with no sign of damage. They are so much easier to deal with rather than those floaty paper gaskets that can't decide whether to stay on the crankcase or the cover.

As the guy said, grease liberally both sides but I would also advocate that you use studs if you can.

A dealer near me has those thick cork type gaskets. I think they were about £4 each.

Be carefull with those cork gaskets,if the gaskets are to thick it could effect your clutch action.

I've always greased gaskets and I've never had one come off in one piece.
