GT186 kit on a standard Li150 bottom end

Postby 507VBH » Thu Apr 28, 2016 8:01 pm

Hi,

I am thinking of putting a GT186 kit on a standard Li150 S2 crank and bearings with a 17T front sprocket and a beefed up clutch. Has anybody done this?

I know it is a bit risky but if the crank lets go I will fit a new one. I cannot find the cash right now to do it by the book!

Cheers

I am probably the last person to answer this question with my past record, but, any shortcuts i take knowing that it is not really recomended normally backfires cost wise rather dramatically in the long run, and i end up kicking myself !!!!!!!!
Personally i would suggest staying off any mod until you can afford the crank.

"Personally i would suggest staying off any mod until you can afford the crank.", wise words as there is no point building a better engine on a poor foundation. I'd not be looking to run any kit on that crank other than a fairly standard iron 175. It is false economy to spend money on a more powerful kit as you'll end up paying twice if the crank fails and wrecks the bore or the extra power rips the known weak taper off the crank, in which case you're either paying for a better replacement crank, replacement piston and rebore, or you're paying for a replacement crank and a new ignition kit (not forgetting bearings and sundries).

Building up on poor foundations can never be a good thing.

I completely agree with the replies above and would add that it wouldn't pull a 17t sprocket in anycase and would struggle with a 16 as well.

What the cheapest I could get a suitable crank for?

This is pretty cheap but I have no knowledge as to how good they are http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/26229660 ... 122&ff19=0

Unfortunately, each component has a knock on effect to others involved.

If going to the trouble of ‘re-cranking’ then the strongest generic cranks are the GP with the big taper.

An Indian GP200 crank, even second hand, re-rodded should be a consideration.

Bigger tapers require a flywheel with a bigger taper, but you could fit a GP 200 centre to your existing flywheel, if it would be suitable.

Bottom end bearings & seals will need changing.

If you don’t already have it, you should get Sticky’s Bible…….

Mine is pulling Li150 16/46 with a Fran Race Colin, thrashed it down to Cambridge at the weekend and it pulled it no problem. I do have the 60/110 crank which helps.

 We all do it. I did have a 17t sprocket in there at 1st but that did struggle a little, however my GT200 with bgm clubman pulls 17/46 quite happily
