Sorry I have been away a few days so no responses to all your advice - Thanks very much for the different guidance, I am sure one of them is the right action to take - for the moment i changed stator plate with a one from a friend which his tells me was working fine previously with new points and condenser.

Same result - exactly the bloody same - red and brown wire give a spark when touched to earth, green gives nothing................... connected up to junction box just ton see if any spark at HT lead - nothing , zero ziltch - gonna go out and get a tester I think..... to be continued

PS
Have unplugged all wires in headlamp and checked are correct, no ignition to worry about, cut off switch seems to be working OK - I am sure it is something very simple - its just impossible for me to find it !!!!!

Hi harps2
An analogue meter on ohms will show a small deflection when connected between green from stator and earth.Dont concern yourself with any other wires other than green.
1 using thin paper see if points grip paper when closed this will tell you points are closing fully. The central boss of flywheel must be for points, it has a concentric shape .Electronic flywheels have 2 lugs or flags on magnets
2 with green wire held close to frame ground see if you have spark.... note plug must be out to get sufficient speed of engine revolutions.
3.if no spark connect up meter as above and see if needle on meter moves as you pass through ign firing point. The wire from stator must not be connected into any junction box..I f no movement or no spark then you have a short or faulty coil or points
4 I f you do have spark from Lt then you could bypass any junction boxes by running a wire from green stator direct to HT coil
Making sure just your new wire is connected to HT , this will eliminate ign switch and junction boxes.Note that HT coil is earthed either by the body of coil or bolt on terminal.you will have to stall engine or short green to earth to stop it running
Big smile when it runs
