losing the will to live trying to set this avanti up! 30mm phbh varietronic ignition franspeed super tourer,5 plate clutch, dynoed at 17bhp with 12lb torque ! disapointing to say the least! spoken to ron moss jetting and plug colour near bang on! (125 main 55 pilot x7 2nd clip av266) ticks over fine runs ok little boggy at low revs just no power in it dyes a death on hills (4.82 sx200) crap on fuel! my 186 mugello with a clubman out performs it in speed torque and fuel returns ! could it be the varietronic restricting the kit? (revs wise) any ideas would be help full!

I'm told that a poor earth may affect how well Variatronics perform

Setup is much like mine... but my local clubmate with a P210 Malossi doesn't like to ride with me as my bike is too fast! You shouldn't be disappointed by it... :?: :!:

I wonder if your ignition profile isn't suited or set correctly? What is the ignition range... low rpm and max revs?

Give Ron a call on tuesday.
Pretty sure it will go well with static 17 degree.
Something about the variatronic the kit doesnt like.

my first thought would be stuck rings ?

I've had an Avanti set up very similar to yours, Varitronic, 30mm PHBH and Franspeed Tour (not the Super). Ran fine and got over 20 bhp out of the box by just bolting it together.

Ive just done a 500 mile round trip with 3 other Avanti's' and not a problem with any of them.......one blew the end can cap and padding out of his exhaust but that's a different tale.

The Avanti is a good kit and if you stick with it i'm sure you'll have a smile on your face.

I'm in York and would be happy to help if your local

I've just fitted a reed valve to mine, it was a bit of a faff getting clearance for the manifold and I had to cut windows in the piston but it runs very sweetly. Still running in so taking it gently but it pulls from 20mph in top with no bogginess all the way up to 55mph where the power starts to really kick in. Still experiment with jetting, the carb is still jetted for the TS1 that I've had in the scoot for the last year but it seems to be pretty close. No idea on fuel consumption yet but it used to only return around 30 mpg :?

coaster i am interested in your reed valve conversion
can you tell me what inlet you used?
did you cut an arch in the piston skirt?
and can you finger port the barrel?
as im looking for a project to tinker with

done all the above to my 225 mugello and it runs nice
still need to dial in the carb though as its not quite there yet
a dyno session is required to get it right

I used an Atomic Ultimate but with the extra size of the Avanti barrel I had issues with frame clearance. I ground quite a bit off the top of the manifold but still had to resort to offset cones. This was the only manifold I could lay my hands on quickly, I already have an MB shorty but I would have needed to take 1/2" out of the frame for that to clear. I took a 'tracing' off a TS1 piston and filed an arch on the bottom of the inlet side skirt and I also cut 2 windows as per the TS1 piston but I didn't try cutting a finger port due to fear of chipping the ceramic. I've only covered a gentle 60 miles and still taking it gently but I'm very impressed so far, it pulls cleanly from 20 mph in top with no bogginess whatsoever. I haven't changed the carb or jetting from the TS1 that was in the scooter until very recently and th eplug is quite black so will be even better when I get it dyno'd 8-)
