Can you use a 60/55 watt bulb in a Jockeys headlight conversion without melting the lens, please?

I ran one for a few months without a problem with the lens but the extra watts with all my other bits and bobs just seemed to be a step to far for the stator output. that was with full DC and battery my rear indicator LEDs and extra brake LEDs were not very good. I opted for a 35w HID with the Ballast replacing the horn. Even more light with low watts. If you put your hand over the lens you can feel the heat but the lens is cool enough. Personally the JB gives a good output with a standard halogen compared with the reeded standard lens

Has anybody tried HID with a fluted glass lens?

I was wondering just how ‘bad’ it might actually be

The alternative might be to obtain a Ø125 mm/5” glass lens from a spotlight & graft on to a Lambretta heat proof (non plastic) reflector. Does anybody know of where such an item may be acquired, please

The standard lambretta reflector is like a coolies hat it's very crude compared with a modern headlight and the flutted lens is to give a glow rather than a beam. Any modern light is focused on the filerment of the lamp like a mag light can be focused to give a sharper beam. The JB fits and is a good solution for the price, if you are not worried about the none standard clear lens

Byron and Pride tried this a few years ago when HID kits first hit the market but the results were a very bright 'blur' that didn't project. Their conclusion was it needed a modern headlamp unit which is why I thought I'd try the JB unit with an HID when it became available.

I have no issue with the looks of the Jockey unit & I take on board the issue there may be with the standard Lambretta reflector being of a differing design.

However, I wouldn’t necessarily say that the reflector is the main problem, whilst the lens obviously is.

I was considering if there may be alternatives.

My reasoning is to seek a viable upgrade @ a keen price.

I think most readers might agree with that principle as I don’t see anybody knocking those that have sourced HID kits @ such good prices!

I’m just following that logic in wondering about the ‘hardware’ to get them to function.

A quick search on eBay soon reveals that Ø125mm/5” lamp units exist so their application might be feasible, if not just the lens itself...

I do actualy have a pair of those but the 4" version but I don't think they would be any good for the purpose you are proposing. If you think about it, the standard set up achieves the spread of light via the reeds in the glass. Modern headlights use the multi-faceted reflector the achieve this. I think if you fitted a clear lens to a lambretta reflector, you would just end up with a spot lamp.

Just been out road testing in the dark, fantastic improvement on the original headlight.
