clutch

Postby JBG584 » Mon Sep 12, 2016 8:18 pm

Hi
Went on the I.O.W rally but had trouble with clutch because of the volume of scooters I had to keep the clutch in for long periods but I found it then wouldn't dis engage so couldn't change gear and then kept trying to move although clutch in .I had to keep putting it into neutral quickly but once I was going when I left the pack it was fine. This is a fairly new complete unit.Any ideas Ray

Could it have overheated and the corks swelled?

it could be a combination of the clutch overheating a bit and if the clutch is a bit heavy your grip weakening with the effort of having to over use the clutch making it harder and harder to pull in fully

I think that many people forget that as the clutch beds in/wears, the centre bell moves closer to the side case. As a consequence, the cable needs slackening to avoid drag.

For that reason, the cable adjuster should be set so that it is ‘central’ when a fresh clutch is installed, thus allowing either slackening or tightening.

I hope that makes sense :)

You didn't mention if this is a standard set up or a 5 plate jobbie. Also, balloon type grips reduce the amount of pull, worth considering if you have them as well as play in the lever pivots.

IOW ride out is a clutch killer, I did it a few years ago and my clutch dragged nearly all the way round but was fine afterwards and until it finally gave up the ghost a year later, won't both doing that again!
