Preparing a frame for powder coating

Hi,

Looking for some advice from those that have fully restored their Lambrettas.

Forks are out of my frame and I have took the fuel filler and dropped the bearing out. The question is do I need to knock out the bearing races before sending for blasting and powder coating. Also how is the chrome ring removed from the top of the fork tube I have removed the grub screw but it is not clear how the chrome ring comes out. Also planning on doing a repair on the stand holes before she goes for blasting. Has anyone welded stiffening plates in rather than leaving them loose?

Ref the chrome ring, its a tight fit in there, what you need is a long steel drift to drive it out from underneath, use something like a 2lb hammer and keep to the very edges of the ring. Heating the outside of the fork tube around the ring may also help. Bearing races can be kept in but obviously its better to remove if possible. Wrapping them tightly in aluminium repair tape will protect them from blast media.

Regarding the top and bottom bearing races/ chrome ring I would leave them in if there in good condition a word of caution regarding powder coaters there not all the same .
I dont know which part of the world your in but I would strongly recommend asking on this forum as its worth choosing someone who knows Lambretta's .
Midas touch in Castleford West Yorkshire did mine and they masked all the bits up correctly .
I got my frame blasted then I took it away did all the welding / repairs then returned it when I was finished they were absolutely fine about it .
The stand bolts often damage the strut holes and a hammer /dolly or tightening a nut and bolt can usually straighten the holes up then welding any cracks and grinding back does the trick.
I would also suggest buying /borrowing Sticky's book as all this and everything else is covered .
