Jet 200 headset top

Postby grandpa » Mon Nov 14, 2016 1:21 pm

Hi Chaps,
I have recently bought a Jet 200.Rather than drill holes in the headset top to fit mirrors ( Like my Indian GP with MKII headset top) I would prefer to buy another headset top to drill holes and keep the original unmolested for if and when I sell her on.Will a Li headset top fit, is there a difference between a Li and a Li special?
This is the current headset top ,scoot has also been fitted with Li type light switch /throttle assembly. It has a 'thrupenny' bit headlamp rim

Would this fit? Looks a bit rounded rather than pointed at the top

I am aware that you can obtain extension arms that fit underneath and are held by the two screws that hold the headset top.
So do I need a Li ,Li special or sx ....or are they the same
Hope you can help
Thanks Grandpa

You'll need a special type headset top to fit a jet.

Why not get a clamp on mirror to avoid drilling the headset? personally I don't use a mirror so couldn't comment if it vibrates more/less, but I'd rather do that than drill the headset.

Depending upon the year, some jets had li style switches fitted. You can obtain the later bulky jet switches from SR.

Standard Li's are round, specials are SX shaped. The one on ebay is for a standard Li and wont fit on yours. Why not get a front brake lever adapter to fit a mirror on.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lambretta-Ves ... xyBvZTUjDU

Hi
Thanks chaps, you have answered my query so I need an sx headset if I do see one on ebay, as I am just getting parts together during the winter ( mirrors wassell, battery etc)
If I cant get a sx top I will fit the Scoot resto type clamp on mirror bracket.
You have saved me from ordering the wrong headset so thanks

Have I missed the bit where somebody points out that the Serveta headset was re-engineered from the Innocenti Li-S type to incorporate light adjusting screws moulded into the sides of both top & bottom? That's what I see in the photo...

IMHO what you have now doesn't look too bad. I think it will look fairly gash if you only change the top & not the bottom, but beauty & all that.... It might have crossed your mind to try & restore the headset back to it's original format, but I'm sure a Eibar aficionado will come along shortly....

BTW later tops had holes for 'idiot' lights above the speedo & even later ones were clothed in fibreglass shells, thus proving that you can make a pig's ear out of a silk purse :)

Apologies, there is holes for headlight adjustment in the side of a Jet headset. Been so long since I had to adjust mine.

I'd just buy a mirror that clamps onto the headset, much easier than all this messing about!

Personally, I'd buy a clamp that clamps around the top and bottom headset, if I wanted a clamp-on type, rather than try to use one that bolts on under the bars and uses the existing headset top screws. I say this as I found that the small original counter sunk screws are not really man enough for the job long-term (unless you do very few miles).

What I have noted is that a number of older commuter bikes that I've seen and/or owned have had a hole drilled through the throttle lever housing and a mirror stem bolted through it. This seems like a reasonably secure way to fix a mirror stem and easy to replace/fix if the mirror is removed in the future. I'll have a look on line to see if I can find you a photo.

Back on topic.....Phew!

This looks like a good solution to me, available in more than one size, coming from the innovative Pat Teatum:

Hi chaps
Thank you for all your suggestions. As I mentioned earlier if I can't get a SX top at a reasonable price I will use the mirror clamps as suggested by Northern Jordan and Adam.Note if you use the front brake lever pivot as suggested by WT you can't use that on the gear lever side as the mirror stem would also move as you change gear.
Thanks again for all the useful links.I am from the sixties era so only one mirror would not be right
