Bought a new layshaft during the summer months to fit over the winter - complete engine strip down/rebuild, bearings the lot etc.Anyway to my point trying to fit the sliding dog having a hell of a game - even using a video that was posted on here a while back using 2 sliding dogs.Prior to this always used Innocenti layshafts - the main thing I've noticed (Its a CASA by the way) is that the hole the bearings and spring goes in seems to be tapered - as in the original ones I have the bearing drops straight through the hole.This one the bearing sits out of the hole but doesn't drop all the way through if that makes sense? can't see any burr that stopping it going in/out. Having never had a brand new layshaft are they supposed to be like this? Or is it a case (as usual) of having to fettle it or get in touch with the dealer? I've had to walk away from it for now as springs & *ucks were flying around the shed this evening and it nearly went in next doors garden( Oh and a new stratos sliding dog as well).

A strange one but I suppose if the balls go into the hole flush with the layshaft, the spring moves freely and if works once you get it together it should be fine. A poster on here some time ago suggested assembling it inside a plastic bag that way you don't lose the balls and spring.

Sounds like its going to be a struggle.
Without the spring do the balls go far enough for the sliding dog to work?
Unless someone comes up with a killer tip think i would drill the shaft and save the faff next time round.
I would also dry build incase there are any other issues with the shaft and you might be unable to return.

Thank you chaps for the replies - managed to get it done this morning :D I think walking away from it last night helped, stepping back and looking at it again this morning.I got a 8mm drill bit and hand turning the drill bit (as in not in the drill just the drill bit with me using my hand to turn it) it cleaned up the hole the one end where the bearing wouldn't drop through.Don't know if it was my eyesight last night -red mist :evil: - or what but I couldn't see anything that was stopping it - but now the bearing goes all the way through the hole.
Another thing I didn't notice last night was when trying to fit the sliding dog, the normal way, this stratos one has chamfered edges to make fitting easier,basically you do it back to front,rather than pushing down you pull it up (page 88 of the sticky book 2nd edition).
Anyway all done now, using the 2 sliding dog method - took about 30 seconds this morning, compared to last night where I suddenly suffered from about 90 minutes of tourettes. Again thank you both for your replies

For those that only have one sliding dog,
2 allen keys and a cable tie works well.

Or two Philips screw drivers and a cable tie. figured that one when trying to put an extra strong spring in. :D
