Greasing Series 2 Fork Links - How?

Postby 507VBH » Mon Jan 09, 2017 5:58 pm

Hi,

The instruction booklet for my Series 2 says that the fork links should be greased every 2500 miles :) As it's been off the road for decades, I guess they may need some grease. However there is no grease nipple on the fork link pivot bolts. There is a grease nipple on the bottom of the links though. Is it possible to remove the fork link bolts and push some grease into the bush without the whole link + spring assembly falling apart?

Cheers!

The earlier ones had grease nipples on the end of the link bolts,if yours dont the only way is to remove the bolts and grease them and re-fit them.If they've been on for that long the chances are that you will need new bushes and to be safe replace the link bolts.

If it has not been used for that long a full strip down would be a very good idea.

Thanks for the comments. What diameter are the bolts?

Not sure, but SR stock them. They also sell the earlier type for Series 1 & early Series 2 forks, with the internal drilled passageway and grease nipple. To get the benefit of being able to grease the things, you would also need to drill a small hole through the steel pivot bush, and ideally fit the bronze bush in the links.
Apparently, the nylon bushes were designed to be 'self lubricating' - which generally meant no grease was ever applied, and they seized solid onto the pivots within a few years. At that stage, a blowtorch to melt them out might be the best option.....
