Hub Fin Repairs

Hi All, I'm new to this forum so before I post my first subject I feel only polite to introduce myself first. My name is Danny and I have a series 2 project I'm hoping to start restoring this year. My knowledge on Lambrettas is limited so hopefully you guys (and girls) can help me along the way with my resto..

The rear hub fins on my S2 have a few broken fins, I would like to repair these and wondered if anyone on here has had success in the pass with this?

I'm guessing the balancing needs to be considered once repaired, also what is the best way to repair them (clean the edge and weld onto the fin) ?

I have a couple of donor hubs I could use to grind the fins off and make a decent one from if needed.

I know its easier to buy a replacements but I'm a fan of originality and would like to keep and repair as much of the original parts this scooter has worn since it left the factory back in '59

Unfortunately a decent used one I managed to find online didn't survive the journey well and ended up with a chunk broken off the brake lining...

The best piece of advice I was given was to buy / borrow "Sticky's" repair guide.

I Think of the rear hub as a service item so I wouldn't get too hung up on not replacing it .
Good brakes and tyres are essential.

If you post a pic or too that will help people to understand better the condition your S2 is in.

Thanks for the advice, I have a copy of Sticky's guide it was also the first piece of advice I was given shortly after taking owner ship of the scooter and money well spent.

I'll upload some images of the hub once I manage to claw my way through the junk to the back of the shed where the scooter has worked it way to.

What is a decent quality hub to go for as a replacement?, there's a few out there and I'm guessing some are not that great a quality.

Hi Dan,

Genuine SIL from Scooter Restorations is usually a safe bet and UNI are reportedly ok. Heard negative reports about FA Italia and some others but a search on here may give you more information. There are some much more expensive "safe" hubs if you wish to go down that route. Other hubs and suppliers are available.

Thanks Rich, I'll bear this in mind. I'm OK with spending the extra for a safer hub. I'm thinking this is the better option now rather than fettling about with my old ones. I'll probably hang the old ones up in the shed as an artistic feature

UNI are bang on for the price.

Most new rear hubs are ok,but what ever you do avoid RAMP hubs at all costs.

I would say a new hub is the way to go. You could possibly repair your old one. But I don't think I've ever heard of anybody doing it. It would be an awful fiddle for what it's worth, and that time and money could be better spent on something else. Both SIL and UNI are good, and Scootopia do a nice sturdy one that's probably more S2'ish. Let us know how you get on with your resto.

That was a good point regarding the shape of the S2 ones, I have noticed mine are slightly different profile to the later ones. I'll check out the scootopia ones, thank you.

Hope you enjoy your Lambretta as much as I enjoy mine,despite all the trials and tribulations getting it back on the road.
I can't believe how attached I've become to The blooming thing.

You've got me wondering if I've got an old Series II rear hub. If it's usable, it's serving no purpose as I've all Series III.

I'm on my way now down to the garage in three layers of clothing. I could be some time....

Brrrr.

I was soldering some terminals as repair but it really is too cold.

Anyway, I found it but it, too, has a number of broken fins. Sorry, as I don't have plans for it. Some customizers used to turn back (big chamfer) or remove the fins altogether, so it may get a reprieve!

Incidentally, I think the OEM hubs had very thin, vulnerable fins, very prone to breakage. Later hubs, or the Scootopia item have thicker fins....

Best bet is a new hub, the fins can be welded back on but it's expensive and the heat used in the welding may warp things if your nor careful, Original is good but the hub is half of your braking system

As Jim says it's part of the braking system so seems the safer bet is a decent replacement scootopia ones in order.
