Sorry for the late/slow response, but even I have done this modification....
The spring is a coiled one that fits in a hole in the actual rocker, so is easily re-fitted. Take it apart in a transparent bag if you're worried about losing bits. The switches are very simple, mechanically.
I managed to re-use the hollow rivets but if you did 'screw up' I would imagine that those shoe eyelets you can buy would do the job. Remember that the screws that hold the thing on will add to any 'integrity'
BTW Vaseline was the lube of choice
