Bgm clubman heat build up

Postby rumiman » Sat Feb 18, 2017 7:48 pm

As I have given up trying to find a Ron moss avanti clubman for my avanti kit, I am considering fitting what appears to be the next best"available" clubman type exhaust. I hear alot about restrictive tailpipes and heat build up, is there anyone who can confirm this as fact through actual use, or are we speaking theory's here?. I know people have run af Clubman's on ts1's, and I have had my muggello sitting at genuine 65 70 for half hour at a time on numerous occasions using a b-race stealth, which I was told would create heat due to its mechanical muffler. I just want some facts before I go to the Extreme of hacking fins on the avanti to get the bgm in place. Thanks Graham

Built an avanti for a pal...the fin machining to make the bgm fit was an engineering exercise in itself....that said he hasnt had any heat build up or running issues..altho the gearing set up was a little tall at 4.8...5.0 is a bit more realistic.

Interesting question this. I've got a BGM clubman fitted to a stage 4 on my GP which, as a standard 200 set up with Indian clubman, ran perfectly well for years until the rings needed attention. I thought a mild tune is just what I needed. Wrong!
I gritted my teeth and ran the thing in as advised for a thousand plus boring miles and thought all well until heading to France last year. I got as far as four miles from Portsmouth. It was going like a steam train when the bastard seized. Taking a risk It would be ok-ish it went into the back- up van and then back out on the other side of the channel. For another 120 miles on B roads at a gentle pace it got me to Brittany albeit the scoot wasn't performing as well as it should have been. Didn't chance motorways back to Caen as originally planned so again vanned it to Pompey, retrieved it at the docks and rode it back to Essex the long way avoiding the main drags, the lump was as rough as a badger's chuff. Got it back to JBtuning who had fitted it and they found most of a ring gone but couldn't point to any particular cause despite a comprehensive check as to why and we all know there is a variety of issues/myths to sort through as to why this shit happens but the mystery remains. Part of the fun I suppose.
I now wonder if you are on to something with this heat build up angle with this pipe and after replacing the piston , another honing etc but still running with the BGM pipe, I will watch other comments on here to see what the general opinion is and decide if it's a good idea to ditch it in favour of something else.
Cheers.

I've fitted a BGM to my Avanti and I didn't have to remove any fins?

I spaced the swan neck bracket away from the engine case by about 6mm and everything is fine. I used some 8mm half nuts and a washer as spacers.

It seems to go OK now, after quite a few un related issues!

Also had a bgm on an Avanti. Had to flatten the inner weld on the pipe with a persuader but other than that it fitted just fine and ran like a dream

Guys....the BGM clubman ....anyone ideas of what people have done to convert them to run better with a TS1 225 ? .......ie; increase tailpipe size etc .....cos of the alleged heat build up

Strummer, this is the question alleged heat build up or fact? , there appears to be people running unmodified clubman's of various make on various spec Lambretta,s. Without heat problems, and other people saying there will be heat build up, so what are the "through road use" facts, it's great to see dyno graphs showing how much and at what revs an engine is making, but it means nothing if that same engine holes a piston when used out on the road. I for one can't believe that someone like mark broadhurst would spend as much time as he did developing this particular pipe,. And then sticking an undersized tailpipe on it without considering the risk of heat build up.

Hi peeps, you cant just blame an exhaust for heat build up, other things to consider is your timing, carb (plug chops), cold/hot running plug, cylinder head squish, hot / cold day, enough air getting to your barrel / head, oil ratio, grade of fuel, two-up with full camping gear, I could go on.... ..........
mind you I've just taken my bullet proof 42mm Ancillotti off my cast Gori 200 (took me to German Euro & back) & replaced it with a BGM 48mm Clubman, so watch this space :?

Interested to hear feedback on the Gori 200 with clubman combo.
