Spanking the......Gears

Postby P D: SC Chester » Thu Feb 23, 2017 8:57 pm

Just been watching a few lambretta rides on YouTube and Some of the chaps don't half give it the beans in 3rd. I'm always a bit wary of knocking it down 1, more a 1234 - 4321 type of pilot. Interested in what others do as regards gear driving and does hammering it in 3rd or dropping it down 1 when at full throttle have any negative effects on the gears??

Cheers

I run high gearing on my TS. So.... I have to thrash it in 3rd up to 68-70MPH then I know it will remain in the power band when selecting 4th.
Otherwise the engine bogs down and you lose momentum if the wind isn't with you. That's the price you pay for high BHP rev monster setups. They make tiresome cruisers cos they have engines that produce most of their power in a very narrow revband.
Mine will cruise ok at about 57MPH in 4th but then 57-70 is a deadzone in 4th.
When I'm out for a cruise with the lads in the club I spend a lot of time in 3rd to to keep the scoot tractable.

Does the rear tyre fit ok or do you need spacers, etc ?

It requires a lot of work to make this size of tyre fit.
1. The inner side of the chain case needs machining slightly to give extra tyre sidewall clearance.
2. A wider crank than normal is used and the magflange is spaced off accordingly to gain clearance on the other side. The edge of the magflange is also trimmed where necessary
3. Extra shim washers behind the rear hub cone are used to centralize the wheel within the tight space available.
4. The frame is modified around the engine mounting area and more spacers are used here to re-centralize the whole engine assembly within the frame.

Effectively, the rear tyre now has the same circumference as the 12" 120/70/12 tyre I use on the front. (give or take 2 or 3 mil)

Consequently..... the stand is extended in length by 1" cos the scoot now sit 1 inch higher than normal.

Not a mod for the faint hearted.

The gearing selected is for use on motorways which is fine. Its great for pissing off the GTS boys which makes me feel better and righteously superior.
Its only a pain when tootling around with standard tuned old timers and those still sporting L plates.
Can't have it both ways I suppose.

Ace- sounds a fantastic modification. What does that make your final drive ratio?
