Will cooling metal chrome collar in a freezer help ease fitment in the frame tube ?

Worth a try, but if my experience of getting one out last week was not fun.

It is brittle, so don't hit it too hard.

Original rechromed fitted back in a lot easier than getting out. Well worth the hassle removing. Religning the grub screw with hole I was concerned with messing up, but able to push in frame by hand three quarters of way.

Just out of interest what's the going rate for a C/R re-chrome at the moment?

Spoke too soon. Every thing was going well. Fitting headset bottom, the gap is not even. One side is up to 2mm roughly different. Never noticed this before removal, but my eye picks up these when refitting. Bit annoying. Can either headset clamp and collar be prone to distorting even though cast items ? Thanks

Even with non-chrome ring headsets you might need to adjust the seating of the headset by fitting shims (washers) of varying thicknesses between the headset casting & the headset clamp. It can take considerable time to get the fit right.

You can’t just ‘assemble‘ Lambrettas, you have to ‘fit’ them.

It wouldn't be the first time that the slot in the fork (where the clamp screw engages) has had to be widened upwards or downwards to allow a better fit of the headset to the leg-shields....

Perhaps this is ‘too much’ information, but as I have the Helicoiling kit to hand, I have from time to time, Helicoiled to M6 so avoiding having to use nuts @ the bottom. Just screw straight into the clamp, preferably with an M6 SHCS (Socket Head Cap Screw). Now, that does make life a lot easier, especially when shimming!

Another one of my ‘Top Tips’ Hah!

Fitting a thin shim through one of the bolts between headset base and clamp bracket done the trick.
