Was thinking of buying a cheap SIL piston as back.
Anyone ever ran a cheap 1 and got away with it? Or is it just a waste of time and effort?

What would it be a backup for? if it's an iron barrel then it would probably get you home albeit at a reduced speed.

Depends what it is going in but the standard Mahle 3 ring is actually a very good piston. Best to run just the top 2 rings though.

Definitely worth it.
It'll get you home and you won't worry about wrecking an expensive piston in a scored barrel.
