4th loose gear ?

Postby Phil D » Tue Apr 25, 2017 7:44 pm

On stripping a motor Iv'e acquired I found a chipped tooth on the fourth loose gear (35t Li 125 Italian)
The question is will a SIL replacement be ok
The engine is not being tuned so will be pretty much standard albeit has a 150 top end .
I'm just worried it may not stack up correctly :?:
Thanks Phil.

Putting two & two together it looks like a needle roller from one of the clutch bearings parted company and ended up in the gearbox .

It's probably been running like that for a while, but not sure if you should risk it any longer. Perhaps if it's not a 'driven' face.

Fourth gear takes lowest torque, arguably, but it's all about peace of mind, ultimately....

If you can obtain a replacement via SIL, it should cope.

providing the new gear has the same no. teeth, same o/s diameter (you need a vernier for this job) & the internals for the selector are the same

Ok how do the SIL gears compare to genuine Italian ones generally?

Phil.I have a GP 150 Vijai Super gearbox in my series 2,it has the same top gear as the Li 125 and that has covered thousands of miles without any trouble.

My belief is that SIL ‘equivalent’ gears for the GP125/200 are not as strong as Innocenti, but almost as good.

It must be testament to them, to a great extent, if they are being used in the BSSO production class, but without facts from those builders/riders, that is still a bit of an assumption on my part.

However, when it comes to the other models (Li, SX etc) I suspect that the gears may be as hard, but not as strong, with a tendency toward even being brittle for use in extremely harsh situations (such as racing). First gears can easily break upon (bump) start up or on the start line! That could well be due to the fact that what was thought to be an SIL gear was not produced by SIL & consequently not to the same Manufacturing Standards.

Which is a long winded way  of saying that they are probably fine for most scenarios, such as yours, if you cannot find a preferred Innocenti/Eibar gear to suit ;)

Update..
A bit of good luck ,I use Facebook to first load my photos as I find this works best for me.
A local engine builder I'm friends with on F/b contacted me and had a VGC used gear he has no use for.
So I picked it up last night and did a quick measurement just out of curiosity ... all is good .

I must say the generosity of help on the forum and in general from scooterist's is humbling.

Talking of loosed gears, ;) This is the 4th gear of an Li150 gearbox.Has done several seasons of sprinting with no probs until recently. Will I get away with this damage or is a new one needed.? If so does anyone have one spare? Thanks

The 3rd gear in my sprinter did the same and always jumped out under power, replacement is the only cure.
