Electronic Regulator Fail?

Need help with a tuning kit, how do you tune your scooter, which kit should I choose, and all general tuning and modifcations questions are for in here.

Electronic Regulator Fail?

Postby Wee Mark » Mon May 22, 2017 10:55 pm

When the regulators fail on the Electronic kits, do they go straight away or are the prone to intermittent faults? Mine has been blowing headlight bulbs and tonight I have lost all power but the last thing to go was the side light bulb which glowed very dimly and then went out, scooter still runs so I can only assume its regulator or lighting coil, totally panicking as I leave for Adria on Tuesday next week!!!
any advice at all will be helpful thanks
Mark

Have you got a spare you can change onto your scoot and check with?

It does sound like a regulator failure. They work by syphoning off any voltage above a certain point (about 14 volts I think) and shorting it to earth. That's done by a zenor diode and if you fault is intermittent it could be a bad contact inside. Can't think that it would be anything else from the symptoms you have described. Hope you get it sorted 8-)

You can test to see if its the reg or the stator.
Replace the headlamp bulb for a good one.
By pass the regulator by connecting the input directly to the output
Switch lights on.
Start engine on tickover and you should get full brilliance before 2000rpm if the stator is good. Any more may blow the bulb, so steady away.

It's always a good idea to run with the headlights on at all times as this reduces the stress on these shunt style regulators. They are a primitive design and work their hardest without a working load on the output side.

Ok update, got a new regulator tonight and connected it up, still nothing, scooter runs but no power at all, no back light or horn, just did what Fast n Furious suggested and still nothing, so the lighting coil it must be!, rather frustrating as its a BGM and not done that many miles!!!.....now digging out the old faithful Indian stator plate.......fingers crossed again........
Cheers for all the input Gents....

With the BGM you sometimes have to fit your own crimps. It would be a good idea to check them very thoroughly. With a meter on ohms you should get between 1 and 2 ohms resistance, anything much higher would indicate a high resistance. The earth tag on the stator can sometimes work loose too
