Clutch Basket Wobble?

Stripped down to check my clutch today.

How much left/right play should their be on an Li Clutch Basket/rear sprocket?

if any...


that's the whole big cog part...

As its rocking a few mm from side to side

That's the basket and sprocket wobbling, not the plates..

You can buy shims that fit between the clutch spider and the crownwheel that take up that play , AF Rayspeed sell them

Is it a brass bush or bearings.If its a bush it could be worn,you could try another one and see if that makes a difference.If it runs on bearings they dont tend to wear ( the centre of the basket is made of hardened steel so that you can run bearings)If you are using a GP type basket with bearings you'll find that the centre of the basket will wear.

Thank you - It's an original LI so needle bearings.

The sprocket has play and not the basket, so a shim might well fix it, do i just stick a feeler gauge up there?

I'll know better when I get the clutch basket off - had to order a holder today, ordered some new bearings as a might-as-well too.

From the video it looks like the centre of the clutch basket/sprocket is worn,or the bearings.The centre of the clutch spider could also be worn.Their is a shim that goes on before the spider,most Lambretta shops sell different thicknesses of shims to align the chain.

I've ordered some various clutch spider shims (cheers drivera), some bearings, and a clutch holding tool. Hoping it won't be the basket

I've been reading and some sites say that it is hard to get rid of rock completely.

While you're in the mood for ordering parts you need a tab washer to secure the bolts on your chain tensioner, otherwise the're going to come undone & that won't be nice....& your chain looks pretty slack, perhaps a spot of adjustment required.

Looking @ your video, it looks like you have an old sprung (cush drive) clutch sprocket.

If your machine has any amount of power beyond normal, that is likely to blow up

The chain guide is AF as MB had sold out. I will check re the tab washers. Chain does look slack. It is an 81 iwis as recommended for sprocket sdt up. Thanks for h/u

Never heard of a cush drive rear sprocket WT and have been reading sticky's bible this afto in the glorious leeds sunshine and still none tbe wiser.

I do think it's donald ducked, was laying off splashing for an AF clutch, but that may be the best solution.

Curiouser and curiouser. Would not be suppred to find xmas tree is bobbins. And the gear box. And rear hub bearings. Lol.

Hi mate
If you have Sticky's manual have a look at the pages showing clutch sprockets. If, in the centre where the clutch plates fit, you can see a rivited on plate, that's a sprocket with a cush drive. If the sprocket looks solid, that's what you've got.
I haven't looked at your video but if you've got lots of sideways movement something is definitely poorly,if it's not the sprocket then I'd have a good look at the bearings in your end plate/gearbox.
If you have a manual, the tools & importantly the skills, remove the clutch completely,end plate etc until you find the worn part(s). Throwing a new (& expensive) clutch at your scooter won't fix it if it's not the problem....
When you do your strip down, why not post pictures on here if you're unsure if something is worn out before you splash out, so to speak..

Btw A.F may have sold you the part but I'm sure that's a G.T chain tensioner & you definitely need a tab washer to secure the bolts & they shouldn't be over tightened.

Just to Update

Turned out it wasn't a cush drive clutch - however I have;

Replaced the clutch-spider with a SIL replacement, as the basket was struggling to mate with it. It was hard to remove and once removed it wouldn't slide up and down easily. I think it has distorted.
Replaced the clutch/crown wheel needle bearings.
Shimmed between the crown wheel and clutch-spider.
Replaced springs with CamLam Ultimate Softies.
Checked the chain tension (6mm) and fitted a tab washer.

Went for a test run and all seems fine, will fine tune this weekend after running the clutch in a bit.

Not necessarily.Innocenti also made a riveted sprocket without the springs,this sprocket is ok to use in a standard scooter.
