Can you use a later S3 kickstart shaft in a S2 engine casing? I wondered if there might be any advantage in doing so?

The GP shaft is about 1 or 2mm shorter and requires the inside of the side case boss to be machined accordingly. It is possible yours has already been done though as this was a very common mod back in the day as Innocenti stopped supplying the old style (in the UK at least) around 1970.

Sorry for the laymans grasp of mechanics, but are you saying that basically you remove the corresponding 1 - 2mm from the inside of the casing so that the GP shaft will protrude more?

So that the GP shaft will protrude ENOUGH to get the shim and circlip on.
Check for fit before removing any metal .
