Series 2 Sidecase

Postby ToBoldlyGo » Thu Aug 10, 2017 10:42 pm

They are always said to be weaker around the kickstart area. Hence the ribs to strengthen the later S3. I'm going to be using a Casa 185 kit on a S2 engine and they are known to be high compression. Could this potentially cause problems with the weaker sidecase fracturing around that area?

Yes, the cases can break, as I know, having had that occur with a '200 plus' top end.

However, you either try it as it is, initially, then adjust the compression if you have misgivings, or fit a stronger cover. Whether they exist in SII form, though, I have no idea, although I think there may be 'conversion' SII type kick-start levers to suit SIII covers.

Look out for a Spanish series 2 type, they have ribs on the outside. Ive snapped a few series 2 type chain case sides kick starting bigger motors.

They don't seem to be all that common but a lot of people don't know they are better and they seem to sell them for a normal price.

Also there are 2 types of series 1 / 2 side covers, the laters one are stronger. On the outside they look the same but inside the later ones are again much more beefed up.

I use a Casa 185 on a series 2 engine,I've changed the sidecase too a series 3 and fitted the corresponding kickstart lever, one that fits a series 3 engine in a series 2 frame.

I've been using normal S2 side case on Mugello 186 and GT186 engines with no problems, I don't "stab" my foot on the kickstart though like Ive seen some do which could contribute to the problem.

Indeed there are, Just Lambretta and Buzzsolomoto both sell them as do a few others
