I doubt you'd need to go anywhere as much as an inch for a packer.
I like the idea of running a die down the thread to extend it as a better option (as if

) & can say that it would work on the first forks I found in the garage.
The thread is M30 x 1.5 & I know that is common to the KM6 locknuts used on bearing shafts, axles & the like.
There will be somebody that works in an engineering machine shop that has access to a die or die nut, or the Chinese will sell them on eBay....
