Piston Direction for AF Aluminium 200cc Kit for Smallblock

Postby davla » Tue Sep 19, 2017 11:29 pm

I bought an aluminium 200cc kit with an Asso piston for a smallblock engine a few years back and am just getting around to installing it. I thought the arrow on the piston was meant to face the exhaust port but the gap in one of the piston ring is across the carb intake and the piston got stuck when I tried to instal it. Have I got the piston the wrong way around?

The rings never get as far down as the inlet port, once installed, so that should only be a problem upon installation.

You just need to 'tease' the ring past the edge of the inlet port ensuring that the peg has both ring ends against it.

I hope that helps.

(Presumably there is no boost port in the upper cylinder wall like the Mugello because that can be a problem with ring peg position)

Probably worth checking that the upper edge of the port isn't too 'sharp', a slight chamfer will help ease the ring past the port.

Great, thanks for that, I did wonder whether that was the case.

you could also check the transfers @ the barrel base with the windows in the piston as a check to see if they match, I always check as some pistons have being known to have the arrow pointing the wrong way!! :o
