Timing/Carb settings

Postby jonno » Mon Sep 25, 2017 6:46 pm

Just rebuilt a motor, lined the marks up on the stator/pickup, and to my delight it fired up,a whiff of blue smoke on tick over with a little more on opening the throttle, with a nice crisp sound.I checked the timing with a strobe and it was about 22 degrees. Looking in Stickys manual it says 19 is the recommended setting. I changed the timing to suit and there was a lot more smoke and a blobby :D pick up on the throttle.(blue smoke btw not white) Is it necessary to change carb settings when timing is altered? The kit is an SR190 with fast road tune 26mm dellorto and Stirling expansion. Im tempted to put the timing back to what it was .

I have a 12v system on both of mine and I run them at 17 degrees BTDC.

Original timing was 23 degrees and then Innocenti settled at 21. Without any trickery attached I always set at 19..I. have yet to see conclusive evidence of any benefits in retarding further for static timing.
The addition of a retard unit let's you advance the timing up and then.it retards as revs increase.
Firing.point will affect burn rate so you will always need to check fuelling.
