Hi guys, just thought I'd share this with you. I recently rebuilt my engine and roughly set the timing by aligning the mark on the stator with the flywheel because my strobe light gun was broken, it ran ok but I wasn't happy that I hadn't set it up properly. I ordered a new light and checked it yesterday and it was miles out, it must have been around 30deg TDC! Anyway I spent some time double checking TDC and 19deg TDC and after a number of attempts at adjusting the stator I got the timing set correctly and it now runs great. So as tempting as it might be to just align the stator with the flywheel and leave, don't do it!

Try setting it up with a BGM flywheel with no window... proper PITA that is to get it right...

Well done for finally realising that static timing is never really enough....

TBH the holes in the flywheel were no help, I still whipped the flywheel off about half a dozen times to get it right.

That's where the external pick-ups from Antony Tambs are a godsend......

Just looked this up, looks good but probably takes longer to fit than setting up timing conventions way?

I've got 2 12v Indian electronic kits on 2 of my scooters,I set them both up manually but when I strobed them I found that both were miles out.

I don't pretend to know much about Lambretta electrics but the external pick up is a brilliant idea.

Ok you have to spend a bit of time fitting it but if that's the only negative count me in - I bought one.
In fact all Mr Tambs products look fantastic properly tested products made by someone who actually knows his stuff.

You can even use your old points flywheel.

another advantage is that your internal pick-up can be left in place and disconnected at the CDI then used as a quick replacement if the external one fails. It would take less than a minute to swap the wires back.

I'm not convinced personally.

I used one but to be honest I'm just a sucker for novel ideas. The amount of time fitting was way in excess of just removing and refitting a flywheel a few times. Especially as the bracket failed. He replaced it free of charge, but I'd definitely have had an easier life if I'd just stuck with the internal pick up.

Very easy on the dyno when I was experimenting with different firing angles.
