So what has changed with clutches?!
Whilst I used to be able to build a fairly standard clutch (standard rear sprocket, Surflex B 4-plate, uprated springs) for a fairly standard road motor (anything from standard 125 to mild road tune iron 225) and be sure of thousands of trouble-free miles, over the last 10 years so I've run into more and more issues with clutches getting hot in use and then not releasing fully. I'm not talking about assemblies that don't have sufficient space between plates for separation, nor notched/worn components, nor bikes with insufficient travel at lever (top or bottom), rather, I'm meaning clutches that have everything correct and shouldn't be suffering from drag when warm... yet I've experienced it on a number of motors, as have a number of pals.
Please note that I've got plenty of problem-free clutches and components so I'm not asking for advice on upgrades or recommendations for a better clutch, rather, I'm just wondering what has changed in recent years to make this become an issue? Ruling out the assembly and the bike, the only thing that I can think this could be is an issue of the oil and corks combination. In all cases where I've known this to be an issue, standard ST90 and Surflex B plates have been involved. I'm aware of the old joke of the 'C' in Surflex C standing for 'crap', however, in previous years the Surflex B plates could be relied on for reasonable service!
Any thoughts on the matter?
