TS1 Gearing

Running a standard TS! 225,30mm dellorto,JL3 pipe,GP200 cox 20/46 sprockets. Took it out for first run today and tho running in its very peaky,could do with an extra gear. What are peeps running gearbox/sprockets.My setup was fine for a muggy 225 btw .

That's 4.6 gearing my TS1 also with a 30 PHBH and a JL3 wouldn't pull 4.8 I dropped to something like 5.9 before it became a pleasant ride.

That = a torquey tune, mine did have a 110 rod and a packer to compensate but the port timings were close to standard it was still fairly peaky. On a 1000 mile trip round Germany with Storkoot on his standard Rally 200 I was hard pressed to stay with him on hills. I spent most of the time in 3rd. Got home and dropped the gearing and it was great after that.

My TS1 225 (MB Road Tune for more torque) was perfect on 4.8 with a JL3, with a great power delivery through the revs. There is no point in over gearing a bike so that you only just reach the correct rev range in 4th, which then sees you having to down-shift if you hit a hill or a headwind.

IMO we've become too fixated at trying to do next to no revs in 4th. TS1s don't have to be 'revvy' but they still do want to rev enough to reach the revs that the porting is designed to work at. TBH I've ridden TS1s with very low revving expansions and in most cases they act as a rev limiter before the power kicks in as they should. Fine if you want to gear your bike for a certain speed on the motorway and then never use it elsewhere, e.g. Sunday rideout, which would never see you beyond 3rd, but not ideal for general use. Thankfully, 5 close gears can make this situation but you then find yourself rarely out of 4th, unless on a long straight road.

4.7-4.9 is the range that I would be looking to use... but this suits my requirement and riding style. Each to their own.

Just completed my TS1 build and am hoping to get the engine back in the bike this weekend. As I mentioned on another thread the suggested gearing I received was in this area... I ultimately have gone with 4.7... that's with 150 gear box / JL3 / 60-110 crank. Because of the packing required for the crank the boost was tuned slightly to match the other port timings. Compression is 9.2... I'll see how it goes next week....

Changing the subject slightly.It pulled lovely right from low revs in 3rd.I did a plug chop today,rich at 30,but grey at 50 on these settings.53 idle , av268 attomiser x7 needle 2nd clip down 138 main 70 choke and a 350 needle valve.Two turns out on idle screw. Any richening and it wont pull away and bogs down terribly.Why such a difference between 30 and 50?

If it's weak in mid range go down a clip on the needle or if that doesn't work, which I suspect it won't, then go to an X13 needle, that shouldn't in theory affect you pulling away.

Or even finer tweek put a thin washer under the needle 1st ?
See if that cures it??

Any richening on the needle bogs it down considerably. I have a 40 slide fitted would a 30 be better? A smaller pilot to my thinking may help as it smoke sa lot.Using just over 3% whilre running in.

That boggy mid range issue is well known problem with TS1's

Look at the ts1 avanti curve on here. Maybe it answers your question. These pipes aren't currently available but some improved ones are due for release anytime soon. I dare say a bgm clubman would have a similar effect.

I’m currently experimenting with a Gori 50 sport (not GP50) where Harry Barlow Pro Porting has rebaffled the box and enlarged the tail pipe diameter to attempt to get a compromise between standard looks and performance exhaust. He commented that the tail pipe of a BGM may be too restrictive on my 283 cc motor ( maybe not on a 225?) and it would overheat. It still suffers a bit with the “stutter” that you are describing, it had it with the Supertourer and we have gone up ( yes up) from a 370 main to a 400 and it still feels a bit weak in the midrange. It’s lost 4bhp and 4ftlb as a result and now lacks the roll on in fourth it had with the ST. Exactly how Carlos Fandango described when he tried a Ron Moss on his TS1. He has gone back to a expansion pipe and I feel a change to The CST 3 coming on mine.

I was going to ask if the lean spot was down to the port positions,but if youve had yours tuned grim I wouldve thought that would have solved the problem. Anyone know why the TS1 has this trait?

I used to have mid range lean spots using a 34mm oval bore delly with taffy mk III, until after the 3rd!!!!!!!!!!!! holed piston I went richer on the needle/atomisor area & since I went over to franspeed exhausts & mikuni's I haven't found any problems @ all

Well it’s not a true TS1 as it’s one of Harrys barrels but its similar, reed etc.

With regard to the tune, it’s flys along and solo riding is a joy. It’s only a problem when you are riding to match another rider’s or a group speed. You inevitably end up in the mid range. On my own I can ride through the “stutter” and sit at a decent speed and don’t even notice it. I also have a DSC Scotty lined TS1 that’s replaced my other tuned TS1 and that will also get ridden fast once run in. The stutter will probably still be there you just ride around it, blipping the throttle to keep fresh fuel going in the bore on slowing down, down hills etc. I know some have commented that Augusto 7000 or similar gadgets help but I’ve never tried one.
