I dropped to something like 5.9 before it became a pleasant ride.

5.9 ?
I run 21x46 on TS230 32VHSA & JL3
Pulls great
That’s with a 2.5mm packer & thick head gasket to give a 1.2mm squish

That = a torquey tune, mine did have a 110 rod and a packer to compensate but the port timings were close to standard it was still fairly peaky. On a 1000 mile trip round Germany with Storkoot on his standard Rally 200 I was hard pressed to stay with him on hills. I spent most of the time in 3rd. Got home and dropped the gearing and it was great after that.

4.7-4.9 is the range that I would be looking to use... but this suits my requirement and riding style. Each to their own.

Any richening and it wont pull away and bogs down terribly. Why such a difference between 30 and 50?

If it's weak in mid range go down a clip on the needle or if that doesn't work, which I suspect it won't, then go to an X13 needle, that shouldn't in theory affect you pulling away.
