Running in ?

Postby MickYork » Sat May 19, 2018 8:04 am

I'm just running-in a new Avanti kit and trundling along the country roads at a leisurely 45mph it got me thinking :?

My gearing is 4.8 but if i changed it to say 5.2 would i have to do less miles (at the same speed). The reasoning being after 40 miles on a 4.8 g/box the piston has done less travel than if i'd had a 5.2 g/box. Could i even go to something like 5.8 and do even less miles ?

Another thought......i'm running a Fransped Race exhaust and it doesn't like "45 mph", i'm running in 3rd more than 4th. By running in 3rd my piston is doing more than if in 4th.......should the running-in miles be at certain rev's ? I feel i'd have been better off putting my clubman on to do the running-in and swapped back to the Race when it was done...

If I was running in to spec I'd use the clubman.
You don't seem to get the hole between on and off pipe that expansions seem to have which will enable you to progress up and down the rev range with out having to bully through the dead spot.

Regarding gearing to run in at the same revs you'll just be going slower if you drop.

How many miles in are you?

These are exactly the questions I've asked myself while I was running in an Avanti . Speed is subject to loads of variables. Revs would seem to me to be a much less subjective. I know Charlie Edmonds works on a maximum revs during running in rather than speed.

All a bit academic now........170 miles of running-in and my rear tyre blew out doing 50. Over the headset and 4 broken ribs, stitches to arms and grazes everywhere. Scooter not in the best of health. Hopefully up and running in a couple of months.

Have you had a chance to look into the cause of the blowout Mick?

At the moment i'm struggling wiping my arse let alone taking the wheel off

It was a tubed tyre (brand new tyre) but the irony being i bought 2 tubeless rims a while back and they're still in the hallway.....but not for long and they'll be filled with the green stuff.

Now then believe it or believe it not but the blow-out was my second "off" of the day. My mate suggested riding to Beck Hole near Goathland and on the steep (incredibly steep !!) road into Beck Hole i pulled my disc brake (no anti-dive), slid on the gravel and i suspect broke my ribs. This was very close to the pub and fortunately there was a crowd outside who all rushed over to help  The landlord made me a cup of tea and after 10 minutes i got back in the saddle and set off home. About 20 mile down the road on the A64 i got my rear wheel blow-out. A car behind saw it happen and stopped and helped. He was a first aider and was very helpful. Another first aider stopped (all within a minute) and he took control and was very efficient. Within maybe 5 minutes i had 3 police vehicles, 2 ambulances, 1 paramedic and an AA van who stopped and put his hazards on.

I probably got my arm cut in this off (a few stitches) but even though doing 50 mph i think the most damage (to the scoot and myself) was done at 10 mph earlier in the day.
I'm looking on the positive side and thinking how it could have been much worse. My crash helmet has got the scars to prove why they should be worn and my £6.99 leather rigger gloves have also got the marks to show they did the job. I was wearing Kevlar jeans (without pads) and i can recommend wearing them.

All in all and education and i'll be ordering an anti-dive and fitting the tubeless rims.

Thanks for all the comments and hopefully i'll be on the road in a few weeks..............or maybe a month or so

I'll update when i take off and inspect the wheel.

Glad you are ok...ish but just curious as to what sort of front brake you have. If it is the ScootRs type, they are good but quite a bit too powerful for a lammy as the disc/calliper and master cylinder were made for a small motorcycle with much bigger wheels. Anti-dive won't stop the front wheel locking but will help if braking on bumpy surfaces. If you have this type of setup, a smaller master cylinder would be a good idea like the Speedfighter one.

Tyre wise, I prefer a high load rating over speed as the side walls are a LOT stiffer and might hold their form a bit longer in the event of a puncture.
