Rather than hijack the CST3 thread I think ill start a new one....

From the CST thread...

It was a massive problem for me 80 miles from home with no spares when mine went....

Im a bit confused now,....

GT186 / 200 / 240 + clubman = single reeds ???????????
GT186 / 200 /240 + expansion = double reeds or not ??????????? -

What was the reason for Richard advising against doubling up ?

What is the effect on engine performance / characteristics with double reeds?

...........And why do they seem to break frequently with a GT / expansion set up?
Is there another way to prevent this occurring?

I use Boysen dual stage reeds on my TS1.
I find them a significant improvement over the usual single stage ones out there.
I find they make the engine power delivery a lot more tractable.
I cant see it being any different with the 186.

I have cut my own from the 0.25 Polini Carbon sheet fro PM. They have lasted longer and tend to start to "fray" when wearing rather than just snapping as the supplied reeds seem to do.
The carbon reeds seemed to have a bit more of an "on/off" feel about the ride which I put down to the carbon fibre being much stiffer. I have now gone back to the original reeds as I feel they provide a better ride but replace them yearly which has worked for me.

I think (but don’t quote me on this) that the standard reeds are 0.25 in thickness and coupled to the fact that there are no reed stops causes the top reed to hit the piston, in that fb post Darrell suggests he has had lots of problems with this and you could actually see were the piston was nipping at the top read! He went on to say he changed to a 0.38 or 0.40 thickness reed that he now sells that solved the problem.

That was my post. If you keep the engine in the correct rev range the scooter will still be rideable. I was 50 miles from home when they broke. Biggest thing is you can’t start it unless you have a decent down hill to bump it off.

I’ve doubled the reeds now and done a 50 mile test ride. The 240 broke 2 sets last year with ADS3 pipe. It seems to be a bit more lethargic accelerating now but if I get more than 3000 miles out of a set of reeds I suppose I can live with it. Mine broke a reed that wasn’t the one Rich said the usually break.

I also have a GT 200 and never had an issue with the reeds in that but it only has a BGM pipe fitted.

I’m doubled up on a GT186 28phbh & a BGM box pipe. Avoid going onto reserve as that’s when my two failures have happened.

They are there. Darrell Taylor posted the pictures this evening I think. You can plainly see the reeds coming into contact with the piston. I forget where I saw it now.

The thread seems to have disappeared, firstly Darrell’s pictures disappeared then the whole thread went. Richard started arguing saying there was nothing wrong with the reeds and that ignition timing was the cause.
