Indicator question 1994 GP

Postby Cortez the killer » Mon Feb 25, 2019 2:34 pm

Afternoon all...just got my recently acquired 1994 M Reg GP MOT`d. The tester was not going to MOT it as he stated that it should be fitted with indicators (anything made after 1986 should have them, apparently) . After a discussion he agreed to MOT it as he thought it was probably imported to the UK in 1994 but was probably manufactured many years earlier. When I got home I checked my V5 which said it was declared new when imported (1994) so I guess legally it should have indicators fitted even if it`s retrospectively ?? Funny thing is, I`ve got the last ten years` MOT certificates so it doesn`t appear to have been a problem up until now. Anyone have any experience of this, any loopholes etc. Not sure what to do about next year other than going to another MOT Station and pleading ignorance.

Is there any evidence that they were ever fitted?
Usually there would be remnants of the connections on the wiring loom even if the legshields and side panels have been changed. There's always the possibility that the loom and switchgear has been changed as well.

Hi Cortez
Does your scooter have a Frame Number if so you should obtain a Dating Certificate from LCGB to correctly establish date of manufacture.
Assuming your scooter is incorrectly dated on V5, armed with Dating Certificate the DVLA should be able to issue a revised V5 with date related registration.

Hi,

the MOT guidelines are here:

https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/ ... s/class12/

"Direction indicators aren’t needed for motorcycles that:

don’t have front and rear position lamps
have front and rear position lamps permanently disconnected, painted over or masked
can’t exceed 30mph / 50kph
was first used before 1 August 1986
are ‘off road’ motorcycles designed to carry only the rider
are ‘off road’ motorcycle combinations designed to carry the rider and one passenger in the side car"

The logic implies that if you mask over your headlight and rear light, then you dont need to have indicators. In an earlier section on headlights it says they are needed on motorbikes unless they are masked over, in which case they cant be tested.

It seems daft, but thats what it says!

Surely this would only get you a daytime use MOT?

If on the V5 it is registered as an historic vehicle,it will have been made 40 years ago at least.i.e. before 1986.

Thanks for the replies, chaps....
F`n`F I cant see any evidence at all regarding old remnants of wiring, it was resprayed at least 13 years ago as an AF Replica so guessing it all got removed if it was ever fitted.
Jono..good point but unfortunately I think the original frame number got sprayed over and a new one stamped on (for whatever reason ??) that`s exactly the same as the engine number.
roli… another good point, I`ll check to see if it`s registered as historic.

Thanks all
