Headset Rebuild

Postby Littlewheels » Fri Feb 17, 2023 9:43 am

I'm rebuilding my headset and want to replace the control pulleys and associated plastic/nylon bits but I'm unsure which ones to buy

I've rebuilt a headset before with plastic wheels (not a fan) and I remember the new ones (listed as NOS btw) didn't fit very well and there was play in the new bushes that fit in the gear housing and throttle tube so I ended up using the original parts!

Obviously genuine Innocenti are going to fit but I find the term NOS misleading sometimes as parts can be NOS pattern parts can't they but assume NOS means its a genuine part :?:

Can anyone recommend which ones to use and where to buy?

Thanks

I would agree with above. Mark Broadhurst provides some good headset gear.
You do have to be careful with sellers describing items as NOS. Often NOS rubbish

I’ve just received new throttle control in brass from MB, really happy with quality.
(Not had time to fit it yet though).

Hi

Have you tried scootopia they are pretty well known for producing quality stuff, even with the above company things have to fettled which is a tad annoying.

Good luck with getting sorted.

The Scootopia black plastics are reasonably priced and, in my experience, fit really well. I have used MB brass bar ends but I failed to notice any difference. Perhaps, if you have headset vibration, they may help but they would only be masking a vibration issue from elsewhere on the scooter. MB stuff is, I think, based on Indian 5mm roll pins which means re drilling the rods too.

I usually am but not impressed with their choke cable with wrong nipple on the choke lever end, it was the same at both ends!

I am fitting the mb headset kit also, can anyone tell me how the throttle spring is meant to be tensioned please?.

I can’t get it to snap back at all….

the cable needs to be in really good nick and free running, not kinked or trapped
the pulley gubbins in the headset needs to have no binding in it and not have stuff like wires or cables rubbing against it..
the usually the carb spring tension is enough to snap it back..

some people add springs in the headset that return the throttle, but in an 'ideal world' these are not necessary..

Throttle shaft return springs are usually only used by racers to ensure that the throttle doesn't stay jammed open when the scoot is dropped and sliding sideways into the kitty litter.
You may find that when used on a road scoot that it will make your hand ache after a while due to the extra twisting force needed to keep the throttle open. :!:
