Cables

Hi All. Question?? After renewal of gear and clutch cables, why can I change gear without even using my clutch???

Hiya,,, yes the engine is running spot on, don't miss a beat after rebuild.. but can't sort this gear change problem out, and don't want to risk burning out a new clutch because of it!!!

Do you mean change gear whilst riding by knocking the gear handlebar housing round ?

Yes, that's exactly what I mean, didn't make it as clear as you.
I can engage each gear from 2nd to 4th without depressing my clutch lever...

You can on any Lambretta it’s just a bit clunkier far easier using the clutch and saves on your gearbox ;)

Thanks for the response, but, any idea on how to resolve the problem before I do churn the gearbox up?
Clutch cable too tight/loose... as you guess I'm a bit of a lambretta virgin!@# haaaa

sounds like the clutch cable is way too tight though how you would be able to start the scooter is a bit of a mystery.

Interesting the way you say “sounds like” rather than “feels like”. Can you expand on this?

Have you got full movement on the clutch lever on the handlebars?

Have you a tiny bit of slack on that lever when the clutch is not in use? If not, slacken-off the adjuster or trunnions a bit until you have.

Scoot kicks 1st or 2nd time, runs and rides fine. Tiny bit of slack in lever,to Stickys specification. But as I pull off in 1st up my drive, it won't change down to neutral as I get too the road,so have to change down without using lever. It will change through the gears whilst riding, but occasionally won't, so I just twist the handle without using the lever!@#?

sometimes it's easier to knock the gearchange into neutral from 2nd when slowing down & from 1st into neutral
BUT always use the clutch when setting off & going up & down the gears

Thanks for the advice, very often I have to change down at lights, junctions etc without use of the lever. But don't want to think this will knacker my gearbox or clutch when all is required is a simple fix...

Knocking the gear lever from first into neutral or second gear into neutral will do no harm.

Try adjusting the clutch cable cable to eliminate the necessity to NOT use the clutch when seeking neutral.

I'm probably not the only one who's a bit confused by what you're saying. Are you saying if you pull the clutch in you can't change gear or are you saying you can select gears without using the clutch (an old racing technique)?
