Engine won't switch off

Postby superhooper » Mon May 22, 2023 5:48 pm

Hi, for no apparent reason when i switch the ignition off the engine continues to run. I haven't done anything to the wiring.
Any suggestions what the problem could be? Broken switch?

Cheers Super

I seem to recall having had this a couple of times over the years. Once was ignition timing, the other a faulty cut out switch.

Could be a :-
Duff ignition switch.
Pink wire from the ignition switch isn't grounded.
Break or high resistance in the bullet connections on the green wire. (the brass links that join the rivetted connectors in the bulb holder are notoriously dreadfull for going high resistance. You could consider cleaning and soldering these up)
Broken green wire somewhere.

With the engine running and the igntion in the off position, try:-

1. Using a piece of wire and ground the green wire connections at the rear end (any connector blocks and CDI) If it continues to run then its probably a duff CDI, although unlikely
2. With the headset top removed. Try grounding the the bullet connector on the green wire that runs down the frame. If it continues to run then it's a problem with this green wire.
3. Grounding the bullet connector on the ignition switch green wire. if it continues to run then the the problem is with the connections on the bulb holder.
4. Finally, remove the ignition switch green wire from the connector block and use a multimeter to check for a connection to ground when operating the switch.

It could be that the “kill” wire (green) has fallen out of the CDI box, or that the same green wire has broken somewhere along the route back to the ignition switch (perhaps in the junction box), or the connection inside the key switch has broken.

I have a new ignition switch on order for your ochre scooter, but was this on the blue GP?

Finally got round to fixing this. The green wire to the CDI had become detached from the spade connector.

Thanks for your suggestions
