Varitronic help

Postby Meds » Sun Oct 26, 2014 6:19 pm

I'm trying to diagnose a fault on my mates Varitronic ignition system.
The scoot occasionally starts splutters then stops.
We tried all the usual stuff, cleaning and remaking connections, disconnected it from the ignition switch, checked and cleaned all the earths. Changed the suppressor cap, HT lead and plug We have a spark but it's poor.
Replaced the coil for a new one, the plug sparks but not well.
We changed the whole ignition system for a BGM and scoot starts and runs great so we know the rest of the engine is ok.
We stripped back the loom to try and identify if there was any mechanical damage to the wires and nothing visible.
Unfortunately I don't know how to test the stator or how it advances and retards the timing.
Can anyone help.

http://www.lambretta.co.uk/downloads/vari1.jpg This shows the resistance values but from experience the only way to rule the stator out is a substitute. The CDI retards the timing.

I bought a complete kit on here or from Scooterotica forum.

I still have the stator on my things to do list.

"Byron" fixed a BGM one for me I don't know if he does Varitronic ones.

My mate had the same problem,a niggly missfire traced to the stator.Nobody had a spare in stock and nobody repaired them so he ditched the varitronic and has gone to a BGM setup with lightened flywheel and agusto.

Hi meds,

Probably way off track but just a thought.

Just wondered did this fault occur after you fitted the kit :?: or was it a random failure.

I only ask because my mate had a break down and the symptoms were exactly the same, one minute the scoot was running perfectly, then it stopped, it would attempt to start some times, cough a couple of times and then die...

Turned out to be broken reeds

The Varitronic was fitted several years go and the symptoms started gently then became progressively worse.
The scooter just won't stay running for any period of time with the Varitronic, we fitting a a BGM kit and it started and run fine. Not sure where he is going with this next, i will mention the reed petals to him as that exactly our symptoms
Thanks
