Why don't nothing fit

Postby jonoy » Sun Nov 22, 2015 10:14 pm

Had to take my headset and light out
Why is it that the headlight rim won't fit back on the headset straight
Benn messing about with it for 2 hours when you get rim on screws won't do up
I wished I had a Vespa

If you've had the headset top off, make sure you havn't trapped a wire when you put it back on,if you have the top will sit proud and stop you from fitting the rim.

Know exactly what you mean with my GP. I offer the rim up and then start the screws winding them in carefully to pull the rim in square. If the screws start to feel tight then I push the rim in further. If the screws go too tight then undo them as you don't want to strip the threads.Even though this normally works for me the rim is never a perfect fit all round.

Is it a Special headlamp rim? I find it best to do the 2 big screws up part of the way then fit the bottom 2 rim screws, push down on the headset top and engage and partially tighten the top 2 rim screws. Then push down on the headset top and push the rim into place, this sometimes requires a bit of banging on the headset with my fist. then tighten all 4 rim screws but not all the way. Final tighten of the 2 large screws and last of all, final tighten of rim screws. I would think the GP is similar.

I would slacken the screws which hold the top and bottom together and then fit the rim as often they can cause the headlamp hole to splay :D

Learned this years ago never tighten anything until all bolt/screws are in. ;)

That's how I fit mine, big screws in very loosely just so they catch then fit and tighten the small ones to hold the rim in place without putting too much strain on the threads, then tighten the big ones up fully. Always push the parts together with my other hand while tightening to avoid stripping the threads.

Normally then find I've knocked out a wire in the process and have to do it all over again
