Headset thread repairing

Postby 69GP225 » Mon Jan 04, 2016 12:16 am

Hello,

I have a SX150 but someone has tapped out the rim threads to a larger size. Is there anything available on the market that will reduce the size of the thread. Something like a helicoil. I don't really want to weld up and re-tap if I can help it.

Thanks for the help.

ive used a pop rivet before , with varying degrees of success . fit the pop rivet then tap out the hole in it

I know it's a bit of a bodge job but I have filled the hole with liquid metal , let it set then drilled and tapped it. Still OK a year later and I have removed the screw several times since

You could try Riv-Nuts.they are similar to a pop rivet but come pre-threaded.Various sizes are available, you might have to drill the headset lug suit tho.The riv-nut will be a neater solution.

I've done the same a few times only I add a nut at the back and apply the liquid metal around the nut and screw in place, once it's hardened undo the screw and you have a new thread with a nut for extra strength.

Are the threads ok as someone may have tapped to 3.5 mm and used electric socket screws. The heads are slightly larger but if you have a bench grinder the heads can be reduced to fit in the rim rebates. I've just done a GP headset with 3 mm Rivnuts but as there isn't a lot of alloy on the headset, I turned the outsides down a bit.

I've done one of my headset rim screws with a RivNut. I fitted it from the back so that it pulls towards you ( if that makes sense ) as you tighten the rim screw. Not that it moves, because I Loctited the RivNut in and then put some Quicksteel ( chemical metal ) in any gaps. Talk about belt and braces, I can now chain my scooter to a lamp post from the rim screw !

I brought some aluminum welding rods from eBay for £5, then used a blow torch to melt it in to the hole, then re tapped the thread afterwards... perfect...

I've never heard of them before. I guess the drawback for some applications is that they don't fit flush?
