Vapor blasting is the best method.They do it at-Bead and Shotblasting LTD.Unit2,Lee Bridge Ind.Est,Lee Bridge,Halifax.HX3 5AT.

This is my casing before and after vapour blasting. I found that some of the outer casing had degraded somewhat after 50 years of road grime had eaten into it.
