Los Diablos Scooter Cult post Thanksgiving ride out

Postby GP Kevo » Wed Dec 06, 2023 10:58 pm

This was an invitational ride out hosted by my scooter club, Los Diablos Scooter Cult. I'm not an original member but joined back in the mid 1990s. We are not very active anymore so it was very nice to do something as a club this year. We wanted to keep attendance down so we'd have enough food to share and a decently fast ride out. I took a few pictures. November in Los Angeles is a good time to get out on yer scooter. Temperatures are cool and the sun is usually shining. We met up at Deanspeed. I had ridden down from my place the day before, to help my club prepare everything.

Todd Rodgers in the hat, the only person out here who has proof of going over 100 mph. That's his "new" scooter above, in it's new carbon panelwork and its very old school cast iron piston port tune. It's not his desert salt flat racer.

Christian, our resident German scooterist who has lived here in Southern California since the 80s, and Sean, who works at Piaggio USA, neither of whom is willing to do long scooter rides to rallies but are happy to do local ride outs like this one :)

and Dean Suinn (Deanspeed owner and also the #1 of the club), with the memorial to the Japanese Fishing Village in the background that once was at this location. The Japanese Americans who lived here were rounded up during the 2nd World War and put in concentration camps in the desert. They were never given back their land after their release. Ben Merrill looks on astride his Silver Special powered by a Casa Performance SSR 265.

I also shot helmet cam video of the ride out:
pt 1 https://youtu.be/pudFyJixFhE with repair stop
pt 2 https://youtu.be/lHTxBQGU8SE with arrival at Japanese Fishing Village
pt 3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vwtf7FD-2ys We got stopped and turned around by Harbor Patrol (the Police) and took a very tall bridge to get to our next destination. I was pretty happy my aging TS1 was able to pull up that steep grade in 4th gear. It wasn't a very scenic rideout hanging around the ports but at least the potholes weren't too bad and we had opportunities to open our throttles.

pt 4 https://youtu.be/IAsBAawPhOM?feature=shared We decided to not get a drink at that bar and instead rode straight back to Deanspeed where the Thanksgiving feast awaited. Dean deep fried two turkeys, bbq'd one half a turkey, and promotor Marv Mack, who is an avid Lambretta collector and rider, dropped off several pounds of Prime Rib, which we finished on Sunday. That was some of the best steak I've ever had the pleasure of eating. :)

Then I rode home very late on Sunday night to avoid traffic, and as usual I recorded it and set it to some music to fit the ride.

There are more ride outs this winter, but it is time to start prepping my scooter for it's longer journeys planned for next year.
