Biting off more than I can chew.

Postby mark1 » Fri Aug 15, 2014 8:07 pm

I started this with the intention of, if not doing everything, doing as much as I possibly could myself. I also wanted to buy / beg everything as cheaply as possible. My thinking was that I can spend a few hours getting something back into a usable condition rather than spending top dollar on parts, thus reusing stuff people had discarded and left in the bottom of their shed or were prepared to throw out.
At the start I knew it was going to be a full frame but other than that I had no idea what I was going to build, I was just going to go with the flow and see where I ended up. Apologies that these photo's are coming in one hit, I started just after Christmas and was going to start putting the photo's on here but with one thing and another I've only just got around to it.

First thing I got were a pair of GP panels that had lost an argument with an angle grinder.
Image

Managed to get some bits of panels that had been left over from a cut down project.
Image
Image

Parts started coming in thick and fast now, rear runners, mudguard, headset top and bottom, tool box door. Everything at mates rates, some of it for the cost of a couple of pints.
Everything has had the paint stripped by hand, not one of my better decisions lol.

Image

Next up I bagged some legshields off Ebay. £3.20 plus £9 post.

Image

I can understand why the leggies were so cheap now, ever had the feeling that someone's trying to tell you something. this came out in the leggies after I stripped them.

Image

Indian GP frame purchased, got it for £200, not the cheapest but its got date and NOVA certs and its been stripped. Hours after hours spent on the panel work trying to panel beat them straight. I'm quite anal when it comes to distortion in panels so this is killing me. Not helped that I can't use my garage so I haven't got much room.

Image

Image

Image

I managed to knock up a frame out of 3x2 to hold the frame while I spayed it.

Image

Back in the "big garage" to get some spraying done.

Image

Image

Time for primer. Dispite my best efforts with the hammers, the panels are still all over the place.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Time for some filler, shame I apply it like artex.

Image

Purchased a seat, just needs a bit of welding to get it right.
Image

Final check on panel gap and fit. Still no idea what colour scheme I'm going to go for though

Image

Image

Image

Finally happy with the leggies.

Image

Everything primed, just got to think of what colour to spray it.

Image

A trip to Sheffield for inspiration.

Image

Basecoat
Image

Image

Image

Just in case I missed a bit lol
Image

Now the flake.
Image

And masking.

Image

Do you know what it is yet?
Image

Image

Image

And now the bit I've been worrying about.............Candy

Image

Image

The moment of truth, unmasking.

Image

Image

Image

A couple of coats of Clear then outside to dry

Image

Image

Image

A few more coates of clear then block sanding and polishing.

Image

Image

Image

Time to sort the engine cases out, I managed to dig some SIL GP 150 cases out of the bottom of a mates shed. I've cleaned them up and sent them to Oiltek to get them welded and converted to 200 spec.

Image

Image

Image

Image

After.

Image

That's where I'm up to now, Going to build the forks and head set this week, hopefully get the cables and wiring loom in. I'm half way through making a twin tank conversion so need to crack on with that.
I still don't know what engine spec I'm going for. I'm having a full DC BGM ignition but still considering my options on the top end, I've got a standard 200 so depending on finances I might go for that.
I'm quite happy with how the paint has gone. The colours look superb and the masking is not bad but could be better. ah well, it was never going to be a show winner but as intended all my own work which it has been.

Thanks for looking.

What a great job that must make you feel good knowing it's all your own work , super job and perseverance with the panel work and if you do as good a job on the engine I'm sure it will be a cracker these sort of stories give us all inspiration very well done , really looking forward to seeing the finished product just a shame you couldn't get it ready for the 50th anniversary weekend , top job :D

Brilliant job Mark, gives me faith, however I'm certainly not good with welding (disaster last time I tried) or panel beating and yet to try spray painting. What is the name of your edging tape?

Thanks for all your comments. It makes the literally hundreds of hours spent on it worth while.

The edging tape was from halfords. I think it is 8mm thick. Only a quid or so.
