rt 225 setting up

Postby Martin s » Tue Nov 19, 2019 9:45 pm

Hi, setting up this kit on an Indian casing. I'm using 58/107 crank as that is what
I've already got in it. The casing is tall and no base packer gets the piston level with
the ports, but 0.8 squish. The supplied 0.3 packer makes the piston slightly below the
ports, couldn't say how much but 1.1 squish. Is it a case of having a 110 rod fitted or the cylinder machined?

Could you not just add a .2 head gasket to bring you up to 1mm squish?

0.3 is the smallest you can get for the Rt head, worth a punt but nothing wrong in the 1.1 squish I’d imagine ;)

Personally, I'd use your 0.3mm packer if they're dead level without it. You could tickle a little bit off the bottom of the exhaust port if you're worried about it.

I'd rather have a slightly low piston than a very thin head gasket which is prone to leaks, although I'd think less of a risk does to the 8 point fixing.

Treat the two things seperately

- no gasket to get the piston at BDC as close as you can to the transfer / exhaust ports
- head gaskets to set the squish - 1.1 squish is comfortable - but no lower then 1.0. Use what you have got now to work out the correct size you need to accuratly set it - I always buy a couple of sizes so that Im not stuck waiting for parts when I want to get it finished.

A 110 conrod gives you more flexibility when setting up - but looks like you aren't too far off with current crank

I'd recommend using the set up instructions on the MB website - they are very comprehensive. have a cut of tea and read them through.

Thanks for advice. The beer and the stupid train of thought has worn off now! Will
try a head gasket, although I don't like them rather than piston sat too low.
Cheers.

Head gaskets are more of an issue where the head isn't recessed into the bore and the mating surfaces are not 100% flat. It should be fine on the RT.
