New clutch woes

Well i tried fitting new clutch unit today. When i tightened the clutch nut up the spider became stiffer to turn. It doesn't lock up but won't spin loosely using 1 finger. I checked the depth of spider on back of sprocket and they seem to be flush, maybe the spider protrudes a fag paper thicknesss. Would i get away with using it like this? would there be more heat build up/wear? A friend has suggested linishing the back of the crown wheel. I could send it back but have soaked the plates and can't be arsed with faffing about. Your suggestions greatly appreciated
